Floating Holder – Designed for the Real World

Published by Marc Steele on

The Classic Columbia Marking Tools air impact markers are used to quickly and economically mark part numbers and date codes into metal parts. Sometimes the sheet metal being marked has a bend to it, sometimes the part does not lay perfectly flat in the fixture, sometimes the part isn’t as flat as planned. Well there is a solution to keep using the amazing CMT air impact markers AND help with the issues in the real world.

The 751 Floating Holder allows for automatic adjustment to the surface of the part. The adapter shown is for the use of the classic stamping retainer and type (reducing inventory costs).

The head rotates to meet the surface at the best marking angle possible. The depth of the mark of .005″ for 1/8″ characters , makes any inconsistencies on the surface angle detrimental to the final marking result. The marking head of the CMT Floating holder solves these issues and provides a great mark.

The best use of this tool is on the CMT Slide-A-Mark Air impact marker. If provides the proper approach for the tooling to “softly” contact with the part – and uses an internal hammer to apply the final marking force.

The Floating Holder can be purchasing in many different configurations. The classic stamping retainer as shown or a upgraded grove type holder.
