Dot peen of very small characters

Published by Brian Barbara on

Question: How small of a character can I mark with the I-Mark M-75 series dot peen marker with the “fixed dot” style marking stylus?

Answer:  There are many factors that can affect the results of small character marking.  The “fixed dot” marking stylus provides a deeper mark than our standard pin.  If you happen to be marking softer material like aluminum, you are limited in the size you can go down to and still have a legible mark.  As the marking stylus impacts the part repeatedly creating the character, material is displaced in all directions, with very small characters, this displacement can overlap and allow the character to become distorted.  The picture shown here represents a 1/16″ character, a 5/64″ character and a 1/8″ character legend, as you can see the smaller characters are not as clear as the more common 1/8″.
